Data sources & licences
Last updated 2026-06-17
Safar combines openly-licensed geographic data with our own verification work. This page explains where our data comes from, the licences it's used under, and what we store versus show live.
What we store
Our catalogue of stays and nearby halal places (mosques, restaurants, groceries) is built from openly-licensed sources plus our own curation and guest confirmations. Walking distances are computed once from coordinates and stored. We store only data whose licence permits it.
Where the data comes from
Places and points of interest: OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps. Mosque and landmark records: Wikidata. Maps are rendered from OpenFreeMap; pedestrian walking times are routed via Valhalla (FOSSGIS). Prayer times are calculated with the Aladhan API. Verification details come from certification bodies, the properties themselves, and confirmed guests.
Licences & attribution
OpenStreetMap data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, used under the Open Database License (ODbL). Overture Maps is used under CDLA-Permissive / Apache-2.0 / CC0. Wikidata is public domain (CC0). Map tiles and routing are credited in the map controls. We honour every source’s attribution and share-alike terms.
Booking partners
Room availability, prices, and bookings are handled by our booking partners — you complete any booking on the partner's own site after leaving Safar, and we don't copy or store their inventory. When you book through a partner link we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. See our affiliate disclosure for details.
